How to Plan a One-Day Excursion to Musandam from Dubai Traditional wooden dhow cruising through Musandam’s turquoise waters and rugged mountains on a day trip from Dubai.

How to Plan a One-Day Excursion to Musandam from Dubai

Planning a Musandam day trip from Dubai comes down to four decisions: Khasab or Dibba, the right document for the border, where you are picked up, and accepting a long day. The shared transfer leaves Dubai between 06:00 and 06:30 and you are back between 18:00 and 20:00, depending on which side of Musandam you choose. This checklist takes you through each step in the order you need to make it.

Dubai pickup06:00 to 06:30
Back in DubaiKhasab 19:30 to 20:00; Dibba 18:00 to 18:30
Khasab documentsOriginal passport, 60 days validity, AED 85 border fee
Dibba documentsEmirates ID for UAE residents; no Oman border fee
Cruise priceFrom AED 280 per person for 3 to 10 guests; transfer quoted separately
Coolest monthsOctober to April

Step 1: Choose Khasab or Dibba

Both day trips are full day dhow cruises into the Musandam fjords with lunch on board. The difference is the border, the drive and what you see. Khasab is in Oman: you cross at Tibat, cruise Khor Sham and anchor at Telegraph Island. Dibba runs on the UAE side of the Musandam border: no Oman crossing, a shorter drive, and you are home about 90 minutes earlier.

Khasab full day dhow Dibba dhow cruise
Border Tibat, into Oman None into Oman
Document Original passport for every guest Emirates ID for UAE residents
Border fee AED 85 per passport None
On the water 10:00 to 15:30 08:00 to 15:30
What you see Khor Sham, Telegraph Island, spinner dolphins Southern fjord inlets, spinner dolphins
Back in Dubai About 19:30 to 20:00 About 18:00 to 18:30

Choose Khasab if you want Telegraph Island and the deep inlets of Khor Sham and everyone has a valid passport. Choose Dibba if anyone in the group is travelling on an Emirates ID only, if you have young children, or if a shorter day matters more than the destination. For the background on the khors themselves, see our guide to Kumzar and the Norway of Arabia.

Step 2: Check your documents

Check this the week before you travel, not the night before. A missing passport or the wrong visa type cannot be fixed at the border.

  • Khasab: an original passport for every guest, including children and infants, with at least 60 days of validity. Emirates ID alone is not accepted at Tibat.
  • Border fee: AED 85 per passport for Khasab, which is the AED 35 UAE exit fee plus the OMR 5 Oman visa. Have it ready on the day.
  • Dibba: UAE residents present their Emirates ID. Visitors without an Emirates ID should carry their passport and UAE visa.
  • Nationality: some nationalities need an Oman visa arranged in advance. Tell us your nationality when you enquire.

Two visa problems to check before you book.

If you are on a single-entry UAE visit visa, leaving at Tibat uses it up, and you would need a new visa to re-enter the UAE that evening. Choose a multiple-entry UAE visa or the Dibba cruise instead.

If your UAE residence visa was recently cancelled, renewed or changed, the border system can lag behind the status you see online. Check that your file shows the correct status before you travel, or choose Dibba.

Rules differ by nationality and residency, and they change. Our Musandam border crossing and visa guide covers each case in detail.

Step 3: Pick your pickup point

The shared transfer has fixed pickup windows, and the timing is what makes the day work, so plan where you will sleep the night before.

Starting from Pickup Notes
Dubai hotel 06:00 to 06:30 Khasab and Dibba. Confirm your exact address when booking.
Sharjah On request We confirm the nearest pickup point and time when you book.
Ras Al Khaimah 07:00 to 07:30 Khasab only.
Self drive to Tibat 08:00 to 08:30 Join the transfer at the border. Oman insurance needed; hire cars also need a No Objection Certificate from the rental company.
Abu Dhabi Night in Dubai first The Khasab tour from Abu Dhabi and the Dibba tour from Abu Dhabi include a Deira hotel night before the 06:00 pickup.

Step 4: Know how the day runs

This is the Khasab day as our supplier runs it. Times on the water move a little with the sea and the border queue.

Time Khasab full day dhow
06:00 to 06:30 Pickup from your Dubai hotel
08:30 to 09:30 Tibat border crossing into Oman
10:00 Board the dhow at Khasab harbour
10:30 Spinner dolphins at the entrance of Khor Sham
12:00 to 14:00 Anchor at Telegraph Island: swimming, snorkelling and lunch
14:00 to 15:30 Deeper into Khor Sham; kayaks on request
16:00 Transfer leaves Khasab
19:30 to 20:00 Back in Dubai

The Dibba day starts the same way but reaches the boat at 08:00, spends from 08:00 to 15:30 on the water, and has you back in Dubai between 18:00 and 18:30.

Be realistic about the length. From Khasab it is a 14-hour day with around seven hours on the road, including the border. That suits most adults; for young children it can be a lot. If you want to know whether the drive is worth it for you, we give our honest view in is a Musandam day trip from Dubai worth it.

Step 5: Pack for a day on the water

  • Passport or Emirates ID, depending on the trip, and the AED 85 border fee for Khasab
  • Swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes for the drive home
  • Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses; there is little shade at the anchorage
  • Motion sickness tablets if you are prone to it, taken before boarding
  • A light layer for the air-conditioned vehicle and for winter mornings on deck
  • Clothing that covers shoulders and knees if you plan to step ashore in a village

Life jackets are provided, and lunch, soft drinks, fruit and tea are included. Ask us if you need snorkelling gear. The full list is in our Musandam packing guide.

Step 6: Plan for children

Children aged 5 to 11 pay 60 per cent of the cruise price and under 5s join free, although every child still needs a passport for Khasab and the AED 85 border fee applies to each passport. For families with children under about six, the Dibba cruise's shorter day is usually the easier choice, and the three-hour half day cruise is an option if you stay overnight in Khasab.

Step 7: Book and confirm

Send us your date, the number of adults and children with ages, nationality, and your pickup address. We check availability with our supplier in Khasab and confirm the cruise and the transfer together. The cruise is priced from AED 280 per person for 3 to 10 guests on both Khasab and Dibba, with the Dubai transfer and, for Khasab, the border fee on top. Cancelling more than five days before the trip costs nothing; within two days, half the price is charged.

Plan your Musandam day trip. Tell us your date, group and pickup area, and we will confirm Khasab or Dibba with the transfer.

When one day is not enough

A day trip covers one cruise. Everything else in Musandam starts in Khasab and needs a night: the Jebel Harim mountain safari, the Khasab city tour, the treks and the Khasab zipline. The simplest upgrade is the overnight dhow cruise, which keeps the same 06:00 pickup and adds a night anchored in Khor Sham, or the overnight dhow with a mountain safari the next morning. If you prefer a room, our guide to hotels in Musandam compares the options in Khasab and Dibba.

FAQ's

Send us your date, the number of adults and children with ages, and your Dubai pickup address on WhatsApp. We confirm availability with our supplier in Khasab, then confirm the cruise, the shared transfer and your pickup time. Every guest needs an original passport with at least 60 days of validity, and the border fee of AED 85 per passport is paid on the day.

The shared transfer collects guests from Dubai hotels between 06:00 and 06:30 for both the Khasab and the Dibba cruise. From Ras Al Khaimah the Khasab pickup is between 07:00 and 07:30. You are back in Dubai around 19:30 to 20:00 from Khasab, or 18:00 to 18:30 from Dibba.

For the Dibba cruise, yes: it runs on the UAE side of the Musandam border and UAE residents can present their Emirates ID. For Khasab, no: Khasab is in Oman, so every guest, including children and infants, needs an original passport with at least 60 days of validity.

Leaving the UAE at the Tibat border uses up a single-entry visa, so you would need a new UAE visa to come back the same evening. Visitors on a single-entry visa usually choose a multiple-entry visa or the Dibba cruise, which does not cross into Oman. Check your visa type with us before you book.

Yes. The Khasab shared transfer has a Ras Al Khaimah pickup between 07:00 and 07:30. From Sharjah, we confirm the nearest pickup point and time when you book.

Yes. Drive to the Tibat border and join the shared transfer there between 08:00 and 08:30. Your car needs Oman insurance cover, and a hire car also needs a No Objection Certificate from the rental company. Without it you will be turned back at the border.
