In short: an airport-to-airport (A2A) visa change lets a visitor renew a UAE tourist visa without going home. You fly from a UAE airport, either Dubai or Sharjah, to a nearby country, usually Oman, wait for the new UAE visa to be approved, and fly back, often on the same day. Approval is normally within 4 to 24 hours, subject to UAE immigration authorities.

What airport to airport visa change means, and how it works

It is a way to renew a UAE visa by briefly exiting and re-entering through a UAE airport.

The A2A visa change is popular among visitors whose visa is about to expire, or whose cancelled-residence grace period is ending. This method lets a visitor move from an old visa to a new one and remain legal in the UAE. Travel agencies usually partner with airlines such as flydubai through a UAE airport to complete the service.

You fly to the nearest Gulf airport, such as Muscat, Kuwait, Salalah, Bahrain or Sohar, and then fly back to the UAE after the new visa is approved. Once the visa is ready, you receive it and clear immigration to enter the UAE.

An A2A visa change is often cheaper and faster than flying home. It can be more expensive than some other options, such as an in-country visa change where available, or a cheaper Oman visa run by bus or self-drive.

Airport to airport visa change procedure (Dubai and Sharjah)

The A2A visa change is carried out from Dubai and Sharjah airports. The steps differ slightly between the two.

Residents of Abu Dhabi and other emirates travel to Dubai or Sharjah airport to complete the process, as it is not run from other UAE airports.

Dubai airport procedure

  1. Submit all required documents and confirm the payment channel.
  2. Confirm the last date of your current visa to choose the best day. A day between Sunday and Wednesday is often faster.
  3. Arrive at the airport by 9 AM even for an afternoon flight, or at least 4 hours before a morning flight.
  4. Report to the airline counter where you booked your ticket and collect your boarding pass.
  5. Move to the immigration counter for the exit stamp. Where possible, get a manual stamp on the passport rather than using the e-gate.
  6. Send us a clear photo of your boarding pass and exit stamp.
  7. Wait in the departure area, fly out of Dubai, and arrive at the nearest Middle Eastern airport.
  8. Some airlines such as flydubai let you remain in the plane until it is time to fly back; others may require you to wait at the airport.
  9. Your new e-visa is sent before or on your arrival back in Dubai.
  10. Clear immigration for the entry stamp and eye scan, then exit Dubai airport.

Sharjah airport procedure

  1. Submit all required documents, confirm the payment channel and make payment.
  2. Confirm the last date of your current visa and choose the best day, ideally Sunday to Wednesday.
  3. Arrive by 9 AM even for an afternoon flight, or at least 4 hours before a morning flight.
  4. Go to the Hala counter on the first floor, show your passport and e-ticket, and have the ticket marked "OK to accept".
  5. Proceed to the Air Arabia counter for your boarding pass.
  6. Head to immigration for exit. Where possible, get a manual exit stamp rather than using the e-gate.
  7. Send us a clear photo of your boarding pass and exit stamp.
  8. Fly out of Sharjah to the nearest country, wait, and fly back to Sharjah.
  9. Your new e-visa is sent before or on your arrival back in Sharjah.
  10. Clear immigration for the entry stamp and eye scan, then exit Sharjah airport.

UAE visa rule updates that affect visa change

  • Grace period after visa expiry
The UAE immigration authority scrapped the 10-day grace period for prepaid visa holders. When a prepaid visa expires, the holder must exit the country or extend the visa. An airport-to-airport visa change, an Oman visa run, or an in-country extension where available are common ways to stay legal.

  • Government service fee
The UAE Integrated Government Services authority applies service fees to public services such as Emirates ID applications, residence-visa services and visit-visa processing.

  • Proposed unified GCC visa
The GCC states have discussed a unified GCC visa covering the UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain on a single authorisation. Check official sources for the current status before relying on it.

08

Can you change a UAE visa without leaving the country?

In-country visit-visa extension has been limited, so most visitors exit and re-enter.

After changes to UAE visa rules, the in-country visit-visa extension was restricted. Most visit-visa holders now renew their visa by exiting and re-entering through an airport-to-airport visa change, or by an Oman visa run when their visa expires. Confirm your current options on the official ICP and GDRFA portals.

09

Visa change through Oman (the bus route)

Exiting to Oman from Dubai by road is the budget alternative to the airport route.

An Oman visa run is a lower-cost way to renew a UAE visit or residence visa. Many travellers exit to Oman by road when their visa expires. The typical steps are:

  1. Apply for an Oman visa at least 3 working days before your UAE visa expiry date.
  2. Book a seat on a bus heading to Oman.
  3. Travel to Oman through the Khasab or Hatta border.
  4. Your new UAE visa is processed while you are travelling to Oman or on the next day.
  5. Travel back to the UAE on your new visa.

If the new visa is delayed, an overnight stay near the border may be needed. Border fees on exit are usually paid by the traveller. The airport route is faster; the Oman road route is cheaper.
