– THE EXPERIENCE

The most enchanting night on Liwa's list of things to do

This is the overnight version of a Liwa desert safari, away from towns and roads, for travellers who want a genuine night in the Empty Quarter rather than a few hours of dune bashing. After pickup from anywhere in Abu Dhabi, your guide drives you to one of the world's largest dune systems, crossing the Rub' al Khali by rollover protected 4x4 before stopping at a camel farm where you will meet a herd of black camels.

The evening builds towards sunset at camp, followed by a BBQ dinner cooked outdoors, a campfire, and a proper night's sleep under a sky with none of the city's light pollution. In the morning, Arabic coffee and a light breakfast come with sunrise over the dunes, and there is time before drop-off to visit Mezairaa Fort if the schedule allows. For a shorter route, see the Liwa day tour, one of the full range of Liwa safari tours.

Camping in the Liwa desert, properly

Liwa camping in the Empty Quarter is the fullest way to experience the Rub' al Khali: not a resort stay and not a quick photo stop, but a real night camping in the Liwa desert, on the sand, under the stars. After pickup, the drive out crosses roughly 230 km from Abu Dhabi, about two and a half hours, before the tarmac ends and dune bashing begins on some of the tallest dunes on earth.

Camping Liwa Oasis style means igloo tents, proper bedding and Arabic seating set up at camp rather than a fixed structure, with your Arabiers guide handling the driving, dinner and setup throughout.
