Situation 1 · Visa on Arrival 90-day

Spain, UK, USA, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and 63 others (74 nationalities total) · Mexico (180 days) · Source: Emirates UAE Visa Information

Your passport gives you a free 90-day (or 180-day for Mexico) stamp at the UAE border with no advance arrangement. The on-arrival stamp itself cannot be extended in-country when those days are consumed, an exit would normally be required. However, there is one route to stay without leaving.

Only without-exit option
90-Day In-Country Tourist Visa
While your on-arrival stamp is still valid, apply for a 90-day tourist visa in-country. This replaces your on-arrival status with a full prearranged tourist visa without you leaving the UAE. You gain 90 days from the date of issue and the option to extend that tourist visa twice more in-country if needed later.
Price contact local authorised travel agencies · 48 to 72 hours · No exit required
Apply before the on-arrival stamp expires. Once the 90 days are consumed, the in-country option closes. The application must be submitted while the current stamp is still valid. Submitting at least 5 days before expiry gives time to handle any document issue without overstaying.

Situation 2 · Preapproved Entry Permit

Indian nationals + Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Kenya, South Africa with qualifying US/UK/EU/AU/CA/JP/NZ/KR/SG visa or residence permit · Source: ICP

You entered on a preapproved entry permit a 14-day or 60-day permit obtained before travel through Emirates Airline or ICP, using a qualifying third-country visa or residence document. The 14-day preapproved permit can be extended once, but only at an ICP or GDRFA service centre not through a travel agency. After that one extension, or for 60-day permit holders whose permit cannot be extended at all, there is one without-exit route.

Only without-exit option
90-Day In-Country Tourist Visa
While your preapproved permit is still valid, apply for a 90-day tourist visa in-country through a licensed travel agency or ICP directly. This converts your status to a full tourist visa without any exit. You gain 90 days from the date of issue, with the option to extend that tourist visa twice in-country if more time is needed.
Price contact local authorised travel agencies · 48 to 72 hours · No exit required
Important: travel agencies cannot extend a preapproved entry permit. Only ICP and GDRFA service centres handle that extension. What a licensed agency can do is apply for the 90-day in-country tourist visa once the permit or its one extension has run its course or while it is still valid to avoid any gap.

Situation 3 · Visa on Arrival 30-day

Andorra, Brunei, Hong Kong SAR, Kazakhstan, Macau SAR, Malaysia, Mauritius, Monaco, Mongolia, Republic of Ireland, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vatican City 13 nationalities · Source: Emirates · ICP

Your passport gives you a free 30-day stamp at the UAE border. Unlike the 90-day stamp, the 30-day on-arrival visa can be extended once in-country without exit giving you more time without any travel. If you need more than that additional 30 days, the 90-day in-country tourist visa is the second without-exit route.

Option 1 of 2 most common
30-Day In-Country Extension
Extend your 30-day on-arrival stamp by a further 30 days without leaving the UAE. Apply before the printed expiry date the grace period that previously applied to on-arrival visas was removed in October 2024. This extension can only be done once on the same stamp.
AED 990 · ~4 hours · No exit required · Once only
Option 2 of 2
90-Day In-Country Tourist Visa
If you need more than an additional 30 days, or if you want to lock in a longer stay from the start, apply for the 90-day in-country tourist visa while your on-arrival stamp or its extension is still valid. This gives 90 days from the date of issue and can itself be extended twice more in-country if needed.

Situation 4 · Prearranged Tourist Visa

Pakistan, Bangladesh, India (without qualifying preapproved permit), Egypt, Jordan, Nigeria, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia and all others who applied for a tourist visa before arrival · Source: GDRFA Dubai · ICP

You entered on a 30 or 60-day prearranged tourist visa applied before travel through a licensed agency, an airline or directly through ICP or GDRFA. This is the largest visitor group and has the most without-exit flexibility. A standard prearranged tourist visa can be extended twice in-country, and the 90-day in-country tourist visa is available as a third option if a longer stay is needed.

Option 1 of 3
First 30-Day In-Country Extension
Extend your prearranged tourist visa by 30 days without leaving the UAE. Apply before the visa expiry date. The price includes the government fee paid directly to GDRFA or ICP, the security placing fee, document checking and approval PDF on WhatsApp. IPG and bank charges included.
AED 1,190 · ~8 hours · No exit required
Option 2 of 3
Second 30-Day In-Country Extension
After the first extension, a second in-country extension of 30 days is available still without any exit. Same process and price as the first. After two in-country extensions, an exit is required unless the 90-day in-country tourist visa is taken instead.
AED 1,190 · ~8 hours · No exit required
Option 3 of 3
90-Day In-Country Tourist Visa
At any point while the current visa is still valid before the first extension, between extensions, or instead of a second extension you can apply for the 90-day in-country tourist visa. This gives a fresh 90 days from the date of issue without exit. Useful when a longer continuous stay is needed without repeated extension applications.
Price contact local authorised travel agencies · 48 to 72 hours · No exit required
June 2025 rule: travellers who extend back-to-back repeatedly may have further extension applications refused. If this applies, the 90-day in-country tourist visa is the route to a longer stay without exit rather than a third consecutive extension.
Martin Muthugumi · UAE Visa & Travel Content Specialist
The most common mistake among prearranged visa holders is waiting until the last day to decide. The first extension, the second extension and the 90-day in-country tourist visa are all available while the visa is valid. On the day it expires, every without-exit option closes simultaneously. Apply at least 5 days before expiry and all three routes stay open.

Situation 5 · Cancelled UAE Residence Visa

Employment visa cancelled · Family or dependent visa cancelled · Investor visa expired · Any residence category still physically inside the UAE during the grace period · Source: u.ae · GDRFA Dubai

When a UAE residence visa is cancelled, a grace period applies from the date the cancellation is recorded in the ICP system. During this grace period, the former resident can remain legally in the UAE. There is one without-exit route to convert that status to a tourist visa and stay for a further period.

Only without-exit option
90-Day In-Country Tourist Visa
While the grace period is still running, apply for the 90-day in-country tourist visa through GDRFA or ICP. This converts former resident status to tourist status without any border crossing. The new tourist visa gives 90 days from the date of issue enough to close an apartment, sell a car, complete a handover, or take time to decide on next steps. Once issued, the tourist visa can itself be extended twice more in-country if needed.
Price contact local authorised travel agencies · 48 to 72 hours · No exit required
The grace period starts on the system cancellation date not the last working day. A former resident who estimates from the wrong date can lose days they did not know they had, or miss the grace period entirely. Verify the exact start date on the ICP portal before doing anything else. Once the grace period ends, overstay fines of AED 50 per day begin from day one and exit becomes the only legal route.
Martin Muthugumi · UAE Visa & Travel Content Specialist
We handle cancelled-residence status changes weekly. The most common problem is former residents assuming the grace period started on their last day of work. It started on the cancellation date in the system which is often earlier. Two minutes on the ICP portal gives the exact date. Act on that date, not on an estimate.

Six real questions that came in one for each situation type, written as the person asked it.

Situation 1 · Visa on Arrival 90-day · Singapore

L.H. Singapore

The question that came in
"I am Singaporean and I have been in Dubai for two months on a 60-day tourist visa I got through an agency. The visa expires in 5 days. I know Singapore gets 90 days on arrival. Does that mean I can automatically stay 30 more days once this visa expires?"

What we arranged
The 90-day on-arrival right applies at the point of entry, not mid-stay. L.H. Entered on a prearranged 60-day visa that visa governs the current stay. When it expires, the permitted stay ends. The on-arrival entitlement does not activate automatically once a prearranged visa is already in force. We applied for an in-country status change on day 56, before the 60-day visa expired. A 90-day in-country tourist visa was issued without L.H. Leaving Dubai. She had a fresh 90 days from the date of issue.

Key point: on-arrival rights apply at entry. They do not activate mid-stay once a prearranged visa is already in force.

Situation 2 · Preapproved Entry Permit · India

P.N. India

The question that came in
"I came to Dubai on the 14-day preapproved visa using my UK residence permit. I already extended it once at the GDRFA centre. That extension is now ending in 6 days and I want to stay another two months. Can I extend again through an agency?"

What we arranged
The preapproved entry permit can only be extended once and that extension must go through ICP or GDRFA, not through a travel agency. P.N. Had already used the one permitted extension. No further extension of the preapproved permit was possible. With 6 days remaining on the extension, we applied for the 90-day in-country tourist visa while the permit was still valid. The status changed from preapproved permit to a full 90-day tourist visa without any exit. P.N. Had two months ahead with the option to extend the tourist visa further in-country if needed.

Situation 3 · Visa on Arrival 30-day · Malaysia

A.R. Malaysia

The question that came in
"I am Malaysian and entered Dubai on the 30-day on-arrival stamp. I have been here 25 days and want to stay another six weeks. What are my options without flying home?"

What we arranged
Six weeks is 42 days more than the 30-day single extension on the on-arrival stamp would give. We walked through both options with A.R. The 30-day in-country extension at AED 990 would give 30 more days, getting close but not covering six weeks. The 90-day in-country tourist visa would give the full 90 days from issue with room to spare. A.R. Chose the 90-day option. We applied on day 25 while the on-arrival stamp was still valid. The 90-day tourist visa was issued in-country within 72 hours. No flight, no Oman trip, no disruption.

90-day in-country tourist visa · No exit · Full 90 days from issue
Situation 4 · Prearranged Tourist Visa · Canada

R.P. Canada

The question that came in
"I am Canadian and entered Dubai on a 30-day tourist visa arranged before my flight. I have been offered a short project that will take another 3 weeks. My visa expires in 4 days. Can I change my status in the UAE without going to Oman or flying back?"

What we arranged
Four days was enough time. The in-country status change requires the current visa to be valid and R.P. Had four days remaining. We submitted the first in-country extension immediately with complete documents. A new 30-day tourist visa was processed in-country within 8 hours. R.P. Did not go to Oman, did not fly, and had a clean new 30 days to complete the project from the date of issue.

AED 1,190 · First in-country extension · Processed in 8 hours · No travel needed
Situation 4 · Prearranged Tourist Visa · United Kingdom

P.H. United Kingdom

The question that came in
"I am British and staying with my daughter in Dubai on a 60-day tourist visa. I have about 8 days left and want to stay another six weeks minimum. I have already extended once. What are my options without leaving?"

What we arranged
P.H. Had used her first in-country extension. With 8 days remaining on the extended visa, two without-exit options were still open. A second in-country extension at AED 1,190 would give another 30 days. The 90-day in-country tourist visa would give 90 days from issue. Six weeks is 42 days the second extension just covers it but leaves no margin. P.H. Chose the 90-day option for the additional flexibility. We applied on day 8 before expiry. The 90-day tourist visa was issued in-country within 72 hours. No flight, no border, no gap in legal status.

90-day in-country tourist visa · No exit · Applied before second extension expired
Situation 5 · Cancelled Residence · France

C.M. France

The question that came in
"I have lived in Dubai for four years. My employer cancelled my residence visa yesterday. I need to stay for six more weeks to hand over my apartment, return the car and close my bank account. Do I have to leave immediately or is there a way to stay legally without any exit?"

What we arranged
No immediate exit needed. C.M. Was inside her grace period from the cancellation date recorded in the ICP system. As a French national she could have exited and re-entered on her 90-day on-arrival right but she did not want to travel while managing a handover. We applied for the 90-day in-country tourist visa through GDRFA. The application converted her status to a valid tourist visa without leaving the country. C.M. Had a confirmed legal status and a clear 90-day expiry date to work around for the apartment handover, car sale and bank closure.

Frequently asked questions

How can I change my visa status in the UAE without exit?

The option available depends on which visa you entered on. Visa on arrival 90-day holders (Situation 1) and preapproved permit holders (Situation 2) have one without-exit route: the 90-day in-country tourist visa. Visa on arrival 30-day holders (Situation 3) can extend in-country once for AED 990 or apply for the 90-day in-country tourist visa. Prearranged tourist visa holders (Situation 4) can extend twice in-country at AED 1,190 per extension, or apply for the 90-day in-country tourist visa. Cancelled UAE residents (Situation 5) within the grace period have one route: the 90-day in-country tourist visa. All routes require the current visa to still be valid at the time of application.

Do I need to exit the UAE for a visa change?

No, for all routes described on this page. Every option here keeps the applicant inside the UAE. The condition is that the current visa must still be valid when the application goes in. Once the visa expires, exit is the only legal route and overstay fines of AED 50 per day begin immediately.

How much does a visa change without exit cost in UAE?

In-country 30-day extension for on-arrival 30-day visa holders: AED 990, around 4 hours. In-country extension for prearranged tourist visa holders: AED 1,190 per extension, around 8 hours, up to twice. The 90-day in-country tourist visa price changes regularly contact local authorised travel agencies for the current fee.

How long does a visa change without exit take?

The 30-day in-country extension for on-arrival visa holders processes in around 4 hours. The in-country extension for prearranged tourist visa holders takes around 8 hours. The 90-day in-country tourist visa and cancelled-residence status change take 48 to 72 hours. All times assume complete and correct documents submitted at the start.

Can I apply for a new visa while my current one is still active?

Yes and this is exactly the right approach. Every without-exit option requires the current visa to be valid at the time of application. Applying at least 5 days before expiry keeps all options open. On the day of expiry, every in-country route closes simultaneously.

What is the 90-day in-country tourist visa?

A tourist visa applied for and issued while the holder stays inside the UAE no border crossing required. It is available to all five visitor situations covered on this page. It gives 90 days from the date of issue and can itself be extended twice in-country if more time is needed. The price changes regularly contact local authorised travel agencies for the current fee.

Do I need to exit the UAE after my residence visa is cancelled?

No not immediately. A grace period applies from the date the cancellation is recorded in the ICP system. During the grace period, the 90-day in-country tourist visa can be applied for without any exit. Verify the exact grace period start date on the ICP portal before making plans it begins on the system cancellation date, not the last working day.

How long can I stay in the UAE after resignation?

A grace period applies from the date the residence visa cancellation is recorded in the ICP system. The duration varies by visa category. During the grace period, the 90-day in-country tourist visa is available without exit. After the grace period ends, overstay fines of AED 50 per day begin from day one and exit becomes the only legal option.

What documents are needed for a visa change without exit?

Passport valid for at least 6 months from the application date, copy of the current visa or stamp, passport photograph with white background, and a return or onward travel ticket. Nationals of Iraq, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan must also include their national identity card. For cancelled-residence applications, the cancellation record is useful to include.

How to check UAE visa change status?

On the ICP Smart Services portal (icp.gov.ae) for non-Dubai visas, or the GDRFA Dubai application (gdrfad.gov.ae) for Dubai-issued visas. Select File Validity, then Passport Information, then Visa. Enter passport number and expiry date. The new visa type and expiry date as recorded by immigration will display. This is the only authoritative record not the PDF alone.

What is the next step after a visa status change is approved?

The new visa is recorded in the immigration system immediately. The approval PDF is delivered to the applicant. No new entry stamp is needed. The applicant should verify the new visa type and expiry date on the ICP portal or GDRFA application using their passport number. The new tourist visa can then be extended in-country if more time is needed later.

Can I change from a tourist visa to a work visa without exiting the UAE?

It depends on the employer and licensing authority. Some Free Zones permit in-country employment visa changes. Most mainland employers require the employee to exit and re-enter on an employment entry permit. The employer's PRO or the relevant Free Zone authority can confirm eligibility for the specific role before any application is submitted. This page covers tourist-to-tourist and cancelled-residence-to-tourist status changes only.
