Khasab City Tour

Three hours: the Portuguese fort (1623), Sultan Qaboos Mosque, and 2,000-year-old rock carvings.

The Portuguese built the Khasab fort in 1623 to control the southern entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. It is still standing, and the museum inside holds original manuscripts, pottery and instruments from the maritime trading era. The drive to Wadi Qada takes 15 minutes from the fort. The rock carvings on the wadi walls date to around 2,000 years ago: camels, ships, warriors and geometric patterns cut into the sandstone. The Sultan Qaboos Mosque is open for non-Muslim visits between 09:00 and 11:00.

What the city tour covers that the dhow cruise cannot

The fort, the carvings and the mosque: 2,000 years of Khasab history in three hours

The dhow cruise shows you the geography of Musandam. The city tour shows you the history. The Portuguese fort explains why Khasab matters strategically: it guards the point where the Gulf of Oman narrows to 33 kilometres. The Wadi Qada rock carvings predate the fort by at least 1,500 years. Together they cover over 2,000 years of documented life on this peninsula.

When the city tour makes sense

The city tour is the most affordable and the shortest tour in the Khasab range. It works best as an add-on to a dhow cruise or mountain safari rather than as the sole purpose of a 7-hour Dubai round trip. Most guests book it to use a slot in their Khasab day: morning city tour from 09:00 to 12:00, then afternoon half day dhow cruise from 13:30 to 16:30. Or as the morning activity on day two after the overnight dhow cruise, before the 16:00 transfer back to Dubai.
