The UAE standardised all overstay fines when it removed the tiered system. The rates below have been in effect since the standardisation : the previous AED 200 first-day / AED 125 tiered structure no longer applies.
| Visa type | Grace period | Fine rate |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist / visitor visa (prepaid or on-arrival) | None since October 2024 | AED 50 per day from day 1 after expiry |
| Residence visa (expired or cancelled) | 30 days from cancellation / expiry | AED 50 per day from day 31 onwards |
The fastest way to reduce the total fine is to act immediately. Every additional day adds AED 50. If you are inside the UAE with an expired visitor visa and cannot pay the fine now, apply for a UAE tourist visa extension before the fine grows further : note that the extension itself requires the accumulated fine to be paid first, but it stops future days adding to the total once a valid visa is in place.
GDRFA operates a Decision Committee that reviews applications to reduce or waive overstay fines. This is a formal appeal process for exceptional circumstances : it is not a general discount and is not available to everyone. Approval is entirely at the discretion of GDRFA and the Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs. Applying does not pause fine accumulation.
Minimum fine thresholds to apply
Family / personal visa sponsorship fines AED 1,500 minimum
Employment visa fines AED 3,500 minimum
Applications below these thresholds are not accepted. If your accumulated fine is below the minimum for your visa category, the standard route is to pay the fine in full at the airport or at an Amer Centre. See the UAE overstay fine payment guide for the full payment process.

The petition letter must be in Arabic. A letter in English alone will not be accepted by the Decision Committee. Have the petition translated by a certified legal translator before submission.
The UAE has issued overstay amnesties in the past, allowing undocumented residents to exit the country without paying accumulated fines or facing prosecution. These are not regular annual events. As of September 2026, no UAE-wide amnesty programme is active or confirmed for 2026.
Do not remain in the UAE with accumulated fines on the assumption that an amnesty will be announced. Pay the fine through the standard process or submit a waiver application if your circumstances qualify. Waiting for an amnesty that may not come increases the total fine every day.
For most people, the waiver route will not apply. The practical options are:
In most cases, no. The AED 50 per day fine is fixed and must be paid in full. A formal waiver exists for exceptional documented circumstances (hospitalisation, passport detained, sponsor death, documented passport renewal delay) but requires minimum fine thresholds and is approved at GDRFA's discretion.
Judicial or legal causes (passport held by court or police), documented medical emergency with an Arabic health authority letter, personal or family sponsorship circumstances with supporting documents, company sponsorship with trade licence, delay in passport renewal with embassy letter, or death of sponsor. A petition letter in Arabic is required for all categories.
AED 1,500 for family / personal visa fines. AED 3,500 for employment visa fines. Applications below these thresholds are not accepted by the GDRFA Decision Committee.
7 working days from complete submission to the GDRFA Decision Committee Counter. Incomplete applications are returned for resubmission and the clock restarts.
No amnesty has been announced for 2026 as of September 2026. Do not plan your exit around an expected amnesty : pay the fine through the standard process.
Yes. You can apply for a status change from inside the UAE while fines have accumulated. However, the fine must be paid as part of the process before the new visa or entry permit is issued. The airport to airport visa change is another option for exiting and re-entering on a fresh visa.
You can reapply, but a second application rejected on the same grounds is unlikely to succeed. GDRFA's decision is final in most cases. Pay the accumulated fine at the airport or an Amer Centre and apply for a fresh UAE visit visa if you wish to return.
