The UAE standardised all visitor visa overstay fines to AED 50 per day. The calculation is simple: count the number of days since your visa expired and multiply by 50.
The fine accumulates automatically from the day after expiry. There is no cap: 100 days overstay is AED 5,000. The fine is calculated by UAE immigration based on the entry stamp in your passport and the current date, so the amount shown at the airport is authoritative.

| Visa type | Grace period | Fine starts |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist / visitor visa (prepaid or on-arrival) | None : abolished October 2024 | Day 1 after expiry |
| Residence visa (expired or cancelled) | 30 days from cancellation/expiry date | Day 31 after cancellation/expiry |
Residence visa overstay example: if your residence visa was cancelled on 1 August, your 30-day grace period ends on 31 August. If you are still in the UAE on 1 September, fines begin from that date at AED 50 per day.
Pay the accumulated overstay fine at the airport immigration counter before check-in, or in advance online at gdrfad.gov.ae. Once the fine is cleared, you are issued an exit clearance and can board your flight. You do not need a special exit pass in most cases: the fine payment itself clears your departure. Bring your passport and the fine payment receipt to the check-in desk.
Pay the accumulated overstay fine first (at an Amer Centre, typing centre or online). Then apply for a new entry permit or a change of status to a valid visa category. Once the fine is paid and a new valid visa is issued, your status is regularised and you can remain lawfully. Contact a licensed visa agency to manage the process from inside the UAE. If you want to avoid overstaying altogether going forward, apply for a UAE tourist visa extension before your current visa expires.
For Abu Dhabi and other emirates, check fines at smartservices.icp.gov.ae using your file number. Checking your fine online before travelling to the airport means you arrive knowing the exact amount and can have cash or a card ready.
After paying the fine, a payment confirmation sheet is generated. Keep this receipt. If you are applying for a new visa or status change, the receipt confirms the fine is cleared and allows the new application to proceed.

The only way to avoid fines is to act before your visa expires. Three options:
If you need to travel frequently in and out of the UAE, a UAE multiple-entry visit visa allows you to exit and return within the visa validity without applying each time.
In-country extension: no exit, processed in 2 to 3 working days.
Extend your visit visa
AED 50 per day from the first day after your visa expires. No grace period for tourist and visit visa holders since October 2024. If you overstay by 30 days, the fine is AED 1,500.
No, not for tourist or visit visas since October 2024. Fines begin from day 1 after expiry. Residence visa holders retain a 30-day grace period after visa cancellation or expiry: no fine during those 30 days.
At the airport immigration counter on departure, at any GDRFA Amer Centre in Dubai, at ICP service centres in other emirates, or online at gdrfad.gov.ae. Payment must be completed before you are cleared to board.

Yes. Pay the accumulated fine first, then apply for a new entry permit or status change. Once a valid new visa is issued your status is regularised.
A short overstay with the fine paid typically does not result in a ban. Repeated or very long overstays may lead to a re-entry ban at UAE immigration's discretion.
Act before your visa expires: apply to extend your UAE visit visa from inside the country, exit before expiry, or use the airport to airport change process to exit and re-enter on a fresh visa.
