What the chart tells a first-time visitor: winter crowds at the Burj Khalifa and the Fountain are largely European and Gulf, which is why December and the school holidays sell out first and why Ramadan and Eid timings shift the busiest weeks each year.

Start here. Downtown holds the three things every first-time visitor photographs and they sit within 300 m of each other. The Burj Khalifa is 828 m tall and At the Top on floors 124 and 125 is the standard ticket; At the Top Sky on floor 148 costs roughly double and includes a lounge and a guided element. The sunset slot is the one everyone wants, so it sells out first and costs more. Our advice for a first visit is the standard ticket an hour before sunset, which gives you daylight, the sunset and the city lights in one visit.

The Dubai Fountain shows run in the evening on Burj Lake and are free; the best free vantage is the waterfront promenade outside Dubai Mall, and the best paid one is a table at any of the lakeside restaurants. The fountain was closed for most of 2025 for refurbishment, so check show times on the day. Inside the mall, the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is the one paid attraction worth doing on the same visit; the main tank is visible for free from the mall floor, the ticket gets you the tunnel and the zoo upstairs.
 

The Museum of the Future is the attraction that has changed the first-timer itinerary most since it opened in 2022. It is a two-hour, timed-entry experience across five floors, and it sells out regularly in winter, so book it before you book anything else. It sits next to Emirates Towers metro station, which makes it the easiest paid attraction in the city to reach without a taxi.

Fifteen minutes away in Zabeel Park, the Dubai Frame is 150 m tall and does one thing well: the glass bridge at the top looks north over Old Dubai and south over the new city, which is the clearest way to understand how the place is laid out before you explore it. It is inexpensive, takes an hour and pairs naturally with the Old Dubai half day.
 

This is the half day that first-time visitors most often skip and most often regret skipping. Start at Al Fahidi, the restored wind-tower quarter in Bur Dubai, walk to the Creek, and cross to Deira on an abra for AED 1. The Gold Souk, Spice Souk and Perfume Souk are a ten-minute walk from the Deira landing. Go in the late afternoon: the souks are quiet at midday and busy after 5 pm, and the Creek at dusk with the dhows loading for Iran and Somalia is the oldest working scene in the city.

The Palm is better seen from above than from the ground. The View at the Palm on the 52nd floor of the Palm Tower is a one-hour visit with the whole fronded island below you, and it is the photo most people think they will get from the Burj Khalifa and do not. At Atlantis, the Lost Chambers Aquarium is the better half-day for families; the Aquaventure waterpark next door is a full day and belongs on a longer trip.

Dubai Marina is the evening. Walk the Marina Walk, then take a dhow cruise with dinner through the towers, which is the cheapest way to see the skyline lit from the water. The Marina also has the JBR beach, free and public, if you want a swim on the same day.

Every list of Dubai attractions puts the desert safari in, and for once the consensus is right. The evening desert safari picks you up around 3 pm, takes you 45 minutes to the Lahbab red dunes, and gives you dune bashing, sandboarding, a camel ride, sunset on the dunes and a BBQ dinner at a camp with live shows, back by 9.30 pm. It is also the lowest-cost major attraction in this guide per hour. Book it for day two or three, not your arrival day, and eat lightly before pickup.

These are the attractions for the hottest months, for families, and for the day it rains in February. None of them is essential on a first visit if the weather is good, but each is worth knowing about.

An enclosed tropical rainforest in City Walk with sloths, birds and reptiles. 90 minutes; a good pairing with Museum of the Future.

Dubai Dolphinarium

Dolphin and seal shows in Creek Park, close to Old Dubai. An easy hour for younger children on the Creek day.

Two of Dubai's most photographed attractions only exist for half the year. Dubai Miracle Garden opens from roughly November to May with more than 50 million flowers arranged into structures, and Global Village, the open-air cultural and shopping park with pavilions from about 90 countries, runs from mid-October to late April. Both are in Dubailand, 30 minutes from Downtown, and both are evening visits in the warmer months. If you are visiting in June to September, cross them off and put the time into the indoor list above.

• Downtown. Dubai Aquarium late morning, lunch in the mall, Burj Khalifa an hour before sunset, then the Fountain from the promenade and dinner on Burj Lake.
• Old Dubai and the Frame. Dubai Frame at 10 am, Al Fahidi before lunch, abra across the Creek, souks from 4 pm. Early night before the desert.
• Museum of the Future and the desert. Museum at 9.30 am, Green Planet or free time, desert safari pickup at 3 pm, back by 9.30 pm.
• Palm and Marina. The View at the Palm at 11 am, Lost Chambers or JBR beach in the afternoon, dhow cruise dinner in the Marina.
• If you have a fifth day. Abu Dhabi for Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan and the Louvre on a private Abu Dhabi city tour, or a theme park day at IMG Worlds.

• Metro: the Red Line links the airport, Deira, Downtown (Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station), Emirates Towers for the Museum of the Future, Mall of the Emirates and the Marina. Buy a Nol card at any station and tap in and out.
• Taxis: metered, card accepted, and the only practical option for the Palm, Zabeel Park and Dubailand. Expect AED 30 to 60 for most cross-city trips and a queue at mall ranks after 8 pm.
• Abra: AED 1 across the Creek, the best value attraction in the city.
• Private vehicle: for a family or a group of four, a car and driver for the day often costs less than the taxis and removes the queues; this is how our city tours run.

• Book Burj Khalifa, Museum of the Future and La Perle first; everything else can wait until you land
• Group by area and never put Downtown and the Palm in the same half day
• Winter is the season: November to March for weather and for Miracle Garden and Global Village; December and Eid weeks need bookings a week or more ahead
• Dress: anything goes in malls and on the beaches; shoulders and knees covered at Al Fahidi, the souks and any mosque
• Friday: souks and Old Dubai are quiet until after midday prayers; plan Downtown or the Palm for Friday mornings
• Combination tickets: Burj Khalifa with Dubai Aquarium, or View at the Palm with Lost Chambers, cost less than two separate tickets; ask us before buying individually
