We plan every layover on the same rule: about one hour from landing to the kerb, and back at the terminal three hours before departure. The rest is yours.
If your connection is shorter than this, read our advice on shorter connections first.
See the Grand Mosque properly, then drive the Corniche on the way back. Allow 20 to 25 minutes from the airport to the mosque and about an hour inside with Fast Track entry. From there it is roughly 20 minutes to the Corniche, where we stop once for photographs of the waterfront and the skyline. The drive back to the terminal takes about 35 minutes.
Add one proper second stop after the mosque, and choose it by the day you land.
This is how an 8 hour layover landing at 8am usually runs:
Nine hours fits the mosque, one of the two museums and an unhurried Corniche drive, with time for a proper meal. It is close to a shortened version of our private Abu Dhabi city tour, timed to your flight rather than a hotel pickup.
| Louvre Abu Dhabi | Qasr Al Watan | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Saadiyat Island | Next to Emirates Palace, west end of the city |
| Time inside | 75 to 90 minutes | 75 to 90 minutes |
| Closed | Mondays | Varies monthly |
| Dress | No mosque-style code | Knees and shoulders covered |
| Best for | Art and architecture | UAE governance, Arab craftsmanship |
If you land on a Monday, the choice is made for you. If you are travelling in summer, put whichever you choose in the middle of the day, when being indoors matters most.
Passport first, though. Some nationalities need a transit visa arranged through their airline, or an Abu Dhabi tourist visa, before they can leave the airport.
Tell us your landing time, departure time and the day you fly, and we will send back an hour-by-hour plan. Every private layover tour from the airport includes live flight tracking and Fast Track mosque entry. With more hours to spare, see our 10 to 13 hour plans.

The Grand Mosque and one more stop, usually Louvre Abu Dhabi or Qasr Al Watan. That assumes about an hour to exit the airport and a return three hours before departure. Visit the mosque first, as it sits on the road into the city.
Yes, from about 8 hours, as long as it is not a Monday, when the Louvre is closed. Allow an hour at the mosque with Fast Track entry and 75 to 90 minutes at the Louvre. The drive between them takes around 20 to 25 minutes.
No. Louvre Abu Dhabi closes on Mondays. On a Monday layover we swap it for Qasr Al Watan or a longer Corniche drive.
Loose clothing that covers arms and legs, plus a headscarf for women, covers both the Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan. Arriving dressed saves the queue for changing at the mosque.
Only if you reach the mosque before it closes to visitors at 8:30pm. On a 7 to 9 hour layover landing after about 6pm, we plan a Corniche drive instead.
