Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The one unmissable sight. Come for the late afternoon and stay through sunset, when the reflection pools mirror the 82 domes. Free walk-in guided tours run daily. On Fridays the mosque closes to visitors from midday until 15:00 for Jumu'ah prayers.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Give it a half day if you love art, two hours for highlights. Closed on Mondays, which still catches visitors out. The dome and waterfront stay open to midnight, so an evening walk under the rain of light costs nothing extra.

Which desert safari should you choose in Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi offers two genuinely different deserts. The classic desert safari runs in the dunes outside the city: dune bashing, camel rides, sandboarding and an Emirati dinner camp, ideal if you have one evening, and from AED 189 per person it is one of the best-value experiences in the emirate. The Liwa desert, on the edge of the Rub' al Khali far to the south, is the serious option: some of the tallest dunes on earth, near silence, and the landscape most people picture when they imagine Arabia. Choose the city safari for convenience and families. Choose Liwa if the desert is the reason you came. In winter, evening safaris and overnight camps sell out first, so book those ahead.

What is there to do on Yas Island?

Yas Island packs four major parks into one destination about twenty minutes from downtown: Ferrari World, home of the Formula Rossa coaster; Warner Bros. World, a fully indoor themed park; SeaWorld Yas Island, the region's largest marine life centre; and Yas Waterworld. Around them sit Yas Marina Circuit, CLYMB's indoor skydiving, Yas Mall, Yas Bay's waterfront dining and a beach. One park fills most of a day, and two days covers two parks plus an evening comfortably. Multi-park tickets cost less per park than separate entries.

What can you do in Abu Dhabi for free?

Abu Dhabi's best free experiences are genuinely good, not consolation prizes. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free with online registration, including its daily guided tours. The Corniche gives you 8 kilometres of waterfront promenade with free public beach sections. The Eastern Mangroves boardwalk, Umm Al Emarat Park, the date souk at Al Mina and the outdoor site of Qasr Al Hosn all cost nothing, and the Founder's Memorial at dusk is one of the city's quiet highlights. Between them you can fill two full days for the price of taxi fares.

The best things to do with family

With young children, build your days around Warner Bros. World's indoor lands, the new Natural History Museum, and the Corniche family beach. Primary-age kids love the desert safari's camel rides and sandboarding, and teens rate the dune buggies and CLYMB. The spacing matters more than the list: one big attraction per day plus pool time beats three rushed stops, especially from May to September when afternoons belong indoors.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi after sunset

Abu Dhabi at night belongs to the water and the light. The Grand Mosque's illumination system changes with the phases of the moon. Qasr Al Watan runs its Palace in Motion light and sound show each evening, included in the entry ticket. The Louvre's dome stays open until midnight, the Corniche is lively until late, and Yas Marina's restaurants overlook the F1 circuit. In the cooler months, dinner at a desert camp under the stars is the finest evening in the emirate, and our private Desert Dinner in Style sets a table for two alone in the dunes.

Couples and romantic

The private desert dinner (AED 1,690 per couple), a Saadiyat beach evening, or Liwa's sunset champagne experience (AED 790).

With friends or solo

What are the rules for tourists in Abu Dhabi?

What should visitors wear?

Smart casual is fine almost everywhere; covering shoulders and knees in malls and public buildings is respectful. The Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan enforce dress codes, and the mosque loans appropriate clothing free at entry.

Can couples show affection in public?

Holding hands is generally accepted for couples. Kissing and intimate contact in public is against local norms and can cause offence. Keep it private.

Is there a 3,000 dirham cash rule for tourists?

No. There is no rule requiring tourists to carry 3,000 dirhams. The actual rule is a declaration requirement: cash or financial instruments over AED 60,000, or the equivalent in other currencies, must be declared to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security when entering or leaving the UAE. Cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Can tourists drink alcohol?

Yes, in licensed venues such as hotel restaurants and bars, for visitors aged 21 and over. Drinking in public places is not permitted.

How many days do you need in Abu Dhabi?

Two full days cover the city icons comfortably. Three days lets you add Yas Island or a desert safari, and the new Saadiyat museums now justify a fourth. Guests combining Abu Dhabi with Dubai usually give Abu Dhabi at least two days.

What has newly opened in Abu Dhabi?

Three major openings within the past year, all on Saadiyat: teamLab Phenomena in April 2025, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi in November 2025, and the Zayed National Museum in December 2025. Most older guides do not include them yet.

Is Abu Dhabi worth visiting compared to Dubai?

They are different cities. Abu Dhabi is calmer, greener, and now holds the region's strongest cultural cluster: the Grand Mosque, the Louvre, and the new national museums. Dubai is faster and taller. Most of our guests are glad they did both.

What is Abu Dhabi most famous for?

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque above all, followed by Louvre Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World's Formula Rossa coaster, and its role as the UAE's capital.

Do things really sell out?
