One of the world's largest mosques and the city's defining landmark: 82 domes, over 1,000 columns, the world's largest hand knotted carpet and vast gold plated chandeliers. Built by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as a symbol of peace and learning.
The first museum of its kind in the Middle East, on Saadiyat Island's cultural district. Jean Nouvel's perforated dome casts a rain of light over 9,200 square metres of galleries holding works on loan from the Louvre in Paris and other French institutions.
Abu Dhabi's most opulent hotel, famous for the gold bar vending machine, the grand staircase and gardens that run down to a private beach. At night the main dome cycles through a rainbow lighting effect that is worth the drive alone.
A recreated traditional settlement showing life before the city modernised: an old mosque, a souk, Bedouin tents and craftspeople working pottery, weaving and glassblowing. Also one of the better places near the port to buy souvenirs.
Between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, Al Khatim is where the shore excursion desert safaris run: serious dunes, camel farms and open desert an hour from your ship. This one you cannot do by taxi: it needs a licensed desert guide and a rollover protected 4x4, which is exactly what the safari tours above provide.

On climate, the cruise season from October to May is the sweet spot, with warm days and pleasant evenings. June to September is very hot, when indoor attractions such as the Louvre, Qasr Al Watan and Warner Bros World, or an early morning desert start, are the smart choices.
Cruise ships dock at the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal in Zayed Port (Mina Zayed), around 15 to 20 minutes by road from the city centre. The terminal has immigration counters, a waiting area, taxi ranks and a dedicated pickup zone for tour company vehicles.
