You are not handed the keys and left to it. We provide a roller-protected 4x4 Land Cruiser and an off-road instructor, and you sign a short declaration taking responsibility for the drive. You are then driven out to the Al Khatim dunes, the tallest near the city, for a proper off-road lesson: how to read the sand, how to shift across a dune, the basics that keep it smooth. Once your instructor is happy, you take the wheel and drive the dunes yourself until sunset. After dark you settle into the camp for a BBQ dinner, Arabic coffee and dates, and entertainment, the same warm end to the day as a standard Abu Dhabi desert safari, only you did the driving.
Not included: insurance, alcoholic drinks and quad biking.
Self-drive is a private, made-to-order experience, so the price tracks your group size rather than a fixed per-seat rate. As a rough guide it runs from about 1500 to 2000 AED for a couple. That is well above a shared seat on a driven tour, which is the trade: you are paying for a vehicle, an instructor and a lesson that are yours alone, with the wheel in your hands.
Self-drive is the adventurous choice, not the default one. If you simply want to see the desert without the responsibility, being driven is cheaper, needs no licence, and includes insurance. Here is the honest comparison.

Prefer to sit back and enjoy it? A guided evening safari gives you the dune bashing, sunset and dinner with a driver at the wheel, or take it easy earlier in the day on a driven morning safari.
Self-driving the dunes in a 4x4 is the full version, but it is not the only way to be in control. If you would rather stay on made roads, you can drive your own car out to the desert camp and enjoy the camp side of the safari without the off-roading. And if it is the thrill of driving you are after rather than a full 4x4, you can take the wheel of a quad bike across the sand on a sunset tour.
Driven our way it is safe: a roller-protected 4x4, an instructor beside you, a lesson before you start, and only safe routes. You must hold a valid licence and be willing to follow guidance on the dunes. It is not recommended for pregnant travellers or anyone with back, neck or heart problems, and if you decide on the day that the dunes are not for you, just tell your guide and stop.
