There is no single best time for South Africa, because the safari country and the Cape want opposite seasons.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | May to September | Dry, cooler, prime safari season. Sparse bush, easy wildlife spotting. |
| Summer | November to March | Warm to hot, green, the best time for Cape Town and the beaches. |
| Shoulder | April and October | Mild and settled, a good all-round compromise. |
The dry season and the best time for safari in Kruger and the north. The bush thins out and animals gather at waterholes, which makes wildlife easy to spot. Days are mild and sunny, mornings and evenings are cold, so pack warm layers for game drives. The southern coast also sees whales from around June.
Warm to hot and green, this is Cape Town at its best, with long beach days, the Winelands and the coastal drives. It is peak season around the Cape and over the December holidays, so book early. Safari is still possible but the thick bush makes spotting harder, and it can be very hot in the north.
Mild, settled weather and thinner crowds make these months a strong all-round choice if you want to combine a safari with the Cape in one trip without committing fully to either season.
Winter safari mornings are genuinely cold. Open game-drive vehicles at dawn can be near freezing in the dry season, so bring warm layers even though the days are sunny and mild.
Flights from Dubai to Johannesburg or Cape Town take around eight to nine hours, with little time difference. Many trips combine a few days on safari with time in Cape Town. Confirm your visa route early, as South Africa can need advance processing.

It depends on your focus. May to September is best for safari, while November to March is best for Cape Town and the beaches. April and October are a good compromise.
