Canada is huge and has real seasons, so the right time depends on whether you want summer scenery or winter sport.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | June to August | Warm, long days, the peak season. Best for the Rockies and lakes. |
| Autumn | September, October | Crisp and colourful, thinner crowds. A lovely window. |
| Winter | November to March | Cold and snowy, ski season and the northern lights. |
| Spring | April, May | Mild and fresh, quieter and better value. |
The prime window. Vancouver, Banff, the Rockies, the Great Lakes and the cities are warm and alive, with long daylight for hiking, road trips and wildlife. It is peak season, so book ahead.
Crisp air and brilliant foliage, especially in the east around Quebec and Ontario. Crowds thin after summer, making it a favourite for scenery and comfort.
Cold and snowy, and prime time for skiing in Whistler and the Rockies, plus the chance of the northern lights in the north. Dress for serious cold.
Mild and fresh as the country thaws, with lower prices and fewer crowds. A good value time for the cities before the summer peak.
Pack for the season and the region
Canada swings from warm summers to deep-freeze winters. Summer is for scenery and road trips, winter for skiing and the lights, so pack and plan for the season you choose.
