UAE Visit Visa and Tourist Visa

People use the two names as if they mean the same thing. In the UAE they do not. A visit visa is what a UAE resident arranges for a relative or a friend. The resident is the sponsor, holds a valid Emirates ID, and applies on the visitor's behalf. This is how the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai defines the service.

A tourist visa works differently. It is issued through airlines, hotels and licensed travel agencies, and the traveller needs no one in the UAE to sponsor them. The official UAE government portal describes it as the visa for anyone who is not eligible for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry. Visit Dubai puts it plainly: you can apply directly on the GDRFA website, or through authorised travel agents and flight partners such as Emirates or flydubai.

Emirates airline adds a third name to the mix, calling agency and airline issued visas prearranged UAE visas on its visa information page. The entry permit document issued at the end is the same in all cases. What changes is who applies and through which channel.

Before applying for anything, check whether your passport already gets you in. Citizens of more than eighty countries receive a free visit visa stamped at the border, with nothing to arrange in advance. The full eligibility list is published on the Emirates visa information page and on the official UAE government portal, and it falls into three groups.

What happens when those free days run out? The stay must end or a new visa must replace it. Travellers in this position generally do one of four things: apply for an in-country extension before the visa expires, cross into Oman by land at Hatta or Khasab and come back on a new tourist visa, fly out and fly back the same day with a new visa already issued, or leave for a trip elsewhere and return on a fresh visa later.

A separate scheme sits between visa on arrival and the standard tourist visa. Since January 2024, Indian passport holders who carry a valid visa or residence permit from certain third countries can enter on a preapproved permit, paid for and arranged before the flight. The federal Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security authority later extended the same scheme to nationals of Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Kenya and South Africa.

If your passport is not in the visa on arrival lists and you do not qualify for a preapproved permit, you need a tourist visa issued before you travel. This is the situation for travellers from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, and all other nationalities not covered by Sections 2 and 3. It also applies to Indian passport holders who do not carry one of the qualifying third country documents.

The visa comes in four standard forms: 30 or 60 days, single or multiple entry. It can be applied for directly on the GDRFA website, through a UAE airline when booking a flight, or through a licensed travel agency. The agency route is most used because the agency checks documents before submission, places the security deposit the government requires, and handles the application end to end.

When a flight leaves tomorrow morning, the standard two to three day window does not work. The express route delivers the same GDRFA tourist visa in four to eight hours. It is not a different visa. The document that arrives is identical to any other tourist entry permit. Only the speed changes, and the price reflects that.

The honest advice from ten years of handling both routes: pay for speed only when speed solves a real problem. A confirmed flight, urgent family travel, a last minute business trip. If the travel dates are flexible, standard processing with complete documents is the better value, because no processing speed can fix a blurry passport scan or a name mismatch.

A large group of people search for visit visa information from inside the UAE: residents whose employment, family or investor visa has just been cancelled and who need legal status while they sort out what comes next. Within the grace period, there are two ways to become a tourist legally.

The first depends on the passport. A former resident whose passport is in the 90 day visa on arrival group, which covers most European nationalities along with the UK, the US, Australia and others, can simply exit and re-enter. The border stamp on return grants a fresh free stay of 90 days. The cheapest exits are the Oman land crossings at Hatta or Khasab. Passports in the 30 day group get 30 days the same way, and a Mexican passport gets 180.

The second way requires no exit at all. GDRFA offers a status change service that converts a cancelled residence visa into a tourist visa while the person stays inside the country. The UAE does not run tourist visas through one national office. Dubai visas are administered by GDRFA Dubai through its Amer service centres and authorised agencies. Abu Dhabi runs through the federal ICP system and the TAMM government services platform, with the Abu Dhabi Residents Office publishing the clearest visa taxonomy for Abu Dhabi entry. Sharjah applications go through the ICP federal channel and the Sharjah immigration authority.

Eligibility is the same across all three emirates. What changes is the service channel, which matters when checking status, extending, or cancelling. Each emirate has its own page: Dubai tourist visa, Abu Dhabi tourist visa, Sharjah tourist visa.

The GDRFA tourist visa service page asks for five things: a personal photograph, a colour copy of a passport valid at least six months from the travel date, a national identity card for applicants from Iraq, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan, medical insurance valid in the UAE, and a return or onward travel ticket.

Around one applicant in five sends at least one document that has to be corrected before the application can go in. Across 84,000 applications handled since 2016, the same five problems come up again and again.

GDRFA publishes 48 hours as the expected completion time for a standard tourist visa. Across ten years of processed applications, the observed median runs slightly longer. Express applications complete in a median of 5 hours 25 minutes.

The rules tightened in February 2026. The fine is AED 50 for every day beyond the visa expiry, counted from the very first day. The grace period that tourist visas once enjoyed no longer applies. Fines must be settled at ICP or GDRFA before leaving the country and before any new visa or status change will be accepted.
