Planning a trip to Sri Lanka? Before you pack your bags and browse those gorgeous Sri Lanka holiday packages, make sure you have every entry document in order. Sri Lanka's immigration rules have seen significant updates in 2025–2026, including a major fee waiver, and being unprepared at the airport can mean denied boarding or entry.

This guide covers every document and requirement you must have when entering Sri Lanka by air, sea, or land, fully updated for 2026.

Valid Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended arrival date in Sri Lanka. This is a strict immigration rule, if your passport validity falls short of this, you will be denied boarding at your departure airport or refused entry upon arrival.

Before travelling, check:

  • Expiry date (minimum 6 months remaining from your arrival date)
  • Blank visa pages (at least one clear page for the Sri Lanka entry stamp)
  • Passport condition (heavily damaged passports may be rejected)

Pro tip for UAE residents: If your passport is expiring soon, renew it before applying for your ETA, as the passport number on your ETA must match the one you travel with.

Sri Lanka ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization)

Sri Lanka uses an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system — an online pre-approval that grants you permission to enter the country for tourism or business purposes.

Key ETA facts for 2026:

  • Stay duration: Up to 30 days from your first arrival
  • Entry type: Double entry (you can enter and re-enter once within the validity)
  • Validity from issue: 6 months from the date your ETA is approved
  • Application: Must be done online before travel at eta.gov.lk
  • Processing time: Usually within a few minutes to 24–72 hours
  • Format: Print a copy of the email approval OR save it on your phone — you must present it at immigration

Important 2025–2026 Update: In October 2025, Sri Lanka briefly announced that ETA on arrival would be completely abolished. This rule was revoked within days and visa on arrival remains available as of June 2026 — though it costs more (see fees below) and is not recommended. Always apply online before departure for a smoother, cheaper process.

ETA Categories

ETA Type Purpose Entry
Tourist ETA Sightseeing, leisure, family visits Double entry
Business ETA Meetings, conferences, trade exhibitions Multiple entry
Transit Visa Passing through Sri Lanka (max 2 days) Single entry, free of charge

Vaccination Requirements

Sri Lanka does not require COVID-19 vaccination proof or PCR tests for any nationality as of 2026.

However, one specific vaccine requirement remains in place:

Yellow Fever Certificate: If you are travelling from (or transiting through) a country listed by the WHO as having a risk of yellow fever transmission, you must present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate at the point of entry. The certificate must have been issued at least 10 days before your arrival.

Check the WHO's list of countries with yellow fever risk before travelling.

Recommended (not mandatory) vaccinations for Sri Lanka:

  • Hepatitis A & B
  • Typhoid
  • Tetanus-Diphtheria
  • Rabies (if visiting rural areas or wildlife sanctuaries)

Consult your doctor at least 4–6 weeks before departure for any personal health recommendations.

Confirmed Return or Onward Ticket

You must have a confirmed return or onward flight ticket when you arrive in Sri Lanka. Immigration officers will ask to see proof that you have arranged your departure from the country.

What counts:

  • Return flight ticket (e.g., Colombo → Dubai)
  • Onward flight to another country (e.g., Colombo → Singapore → Dubai)
  • Your ticket must show a confirmed booking reference, flight number, and departure date

Note: An open-ended or flexible ticket without confirmed dates is generally not accepted. Book your return before you fly.

Browsing options: Our Sri Lanka holiday packages include return flight arrangements, so you arrive fully prepared with everything in hand.

Proof of Sufficient Funds

Sri Lanka immigration requires evidence that you can financially support yourself during your stay. There is no fixed amount specified by law, but USD 50 per day is the widely recommended benchmark cited by immigration authorities.

Accepted documents:

  • Bank statements (last 3–6 months)
  • Credit card with available limit
  • Travel card or prepaid forex card with sufficient balance

The immigration officer has discretion to assess sufficiency based on your travel duration and circumstances. The longer your stay, the more funds you should demonstrate.

Proof of Accommodation

You need to show where you will be staying throughout your trip. Acceptable documents include:

Hotel or Resort Booking:

  • Confirmed reservation with hotel name, address, check-in/check-out dates, and booking reference number

Staying with Friends or Family:

  • A letter of invitation from your host in Sri Lanka including:
    • Host's full name and Sri Lankan address
    • Contact number
    • Duration of your stay
    • Relationship to you

Airbnb or Rental:

  • Booking confirmation showing property address and dates

Currency Regulations

Sri Lanka has specific rules around how much money you can bring in and take out:

Bringing money into Sri Lanka:

  • You may carry foreign currency without limit
  • However, you must declare any amount exceeding USD 15,000 (or equivalent in other currencies) at customs upon arrival
  • Failure to declare may result in confiscation

Taking money out of Sri Lanka:

  • You can take out a maximum of LKR 5,000 in Sri Lankan Rupees
  • Reconvert unused LKR before departure — banks and exchange counters require proof of original exchange receipts

Practical tip: Always keep your currency exchange receipts. If you wish to reconvert Sri Lankan Rupees back to a foreign currency at a local bank, you may need to present these receipts.

Items to Declare at Customs

Sri Lanka enforces customs regulations to prevent the importation of prohibited goods. You must declare:

  • Alcohol (above duty-free limits)
  • Tobacco products (above duty-free limits)
  • Cash or monetary instruments exceeding USD 15,000
  • Plants, seeds, soil, or agricultural products
  • Animals or animal products
  • Cultural artifacts or antiques
  • Personal electronics and jewelry above a certain value

Prohibited items (do not bring):

  • Narcotics or controlled drugs (without medical prescription)
  • Pornographic material
  • Items that could be used to defame Buddhism
  • Certain wildlife products protected under CITES

Check Sri Lanka's official customs regulations for a full and current list before packing.

Extending Your Stay in Sri Lanka

If you wish to stay beyond 30 days, you can apply for a visa extension through the Department of Immigration and Emigration. Extensions are processed in stages:

Extension Stage Duration Added Cumulative Stay
Initial ETA 30 days 30 days
1st Extension +60 days 90 days
2nd Extension +90 days 180 days
3rd Extension +90 days 270 days (max)

How to extend: Apply online at eservices.immigration.gov.lk or visit the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo in person.

Extension fees vary by nationality. Note that the ETA does not permit you to work, trade, or conduct business activities in Sri Lanka.

If you are passing through Sri Lanka en route to another destination, you need a Transit Visa:
