Entry Requirements

Before planning your trip, note that Sri Lanka now requires all tourists to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before arrival, on-arrival ETA is no longer available at the airport (this rule has been in effect since October 2025). Apply at the official government portal eta.gov.lk.  The good news: as of May 25, 2026, tourists from 40 countries including India, UAE, UK, USA, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, South Korea, Japan, and more can now get a free 30-day tourist ETA. The ETA allows double entry within the 30-day period and can be extended if you wish to stay longer. Always apply through the official government site — avoid third-party services that charge unnecessary fees.

What are Security Concerns?

Civil Unrest: Travel advisories were issued out after Sri Lanka experienced civil unrest sometime in 2022. The political and economic demos threatened security of both local and international travellers. Things have since calmed down and the country got peace back. 

In fact, the numbers speak for themselves: Sri Lanka welcomed over 2.36 million international tourists in 2025, a new all-time record, surpassing even pre-pandemic highs. The country is now targeting 3 million visitors in 2026, which is a clear indicator that global confidence in Sri Lanka as a safe destination has fully returned.

Crime and Scamming: It is rare for tourists to experience violent crime in Sri Lanka. However, petty crimes like bag snatching and pickpocketing and also scamming have been reported. Sri Lankans are known for their hospitality but a few ill mannered and petty thieves spoil name of country.

Scamming that tourists see mostly are overcharging by tuk-tuk drivers, inflating prices at tourist shops and credit card fraud. 

Health Concerns: Good number of visitors are worried if Sri Lanka meet health standards. You need to practice good hygiene while there and take care of your health by taking precautions necessary.  Avoid tap water as it is not safe for drink and eat at clean restaurants. 

Sri Lanka has adequate medical facilities and incases of illnesses or injuries visit for help. You should have comprehensive travel insurance when visiting and one with medical evacuation in case of serious illness or injury. 

Transport Safety: Sri Lanka roads are busy and chaotic and accidents are common due to erratic driving standards. There has been reports of tourists that say they have experienced harassment and theft in public transport so you need to closely watch out for belongings when there.

Getting Around Sri Lanka: To stay safe when moving around Sri Lanka we highly recommend hiring professional licensed driver for peace of mind and safety.  You may also use ride hailing apps like Uber and PickMe and negotiate tuk-tuks upfront to avoid fare hiking. 

On the security front, you'll notice a strong and reassuring police presence across Sri Lanka in 2026. Tourist police units now actively patrol major sites and the entire southern coastline, and police presence around hotels and key tourist areas has increased significantly since early 2026. Most popular destinations, including Galle, Ella, Kandy, and coastal resorts, are well monitored and continue to report very low incident rates.

Keep your Money safe: Use ATMs that are in banks or hotels to avoid leaking PIN and also keep your valuables in hotel safe. Have cash in small denominations and cards to avoid walking with lots of cash.   

Beware of Weather and Practice Safety in Adventures: To avoid risks of encountering floods and weather-related hazards like landslides its best to check out weather when planning trip. Check best time to visit especially hill country or coastal areas and follow instructions by local authorities. Go swimming in beaches with lifeguard and obey warning flags given. 

When dealing with wildlife, always keep safe distance and avoid contact with stray animals. Always listen to your guide during safari as they are knowledgeable of protective measures.

Health and Hygiene Practices: Take physical wellbeing serious by practicing personal hygiene.  Avoid ice in drinks unless you sure its not tap water. Drink bottled or purified water only.
