The dhows go calmly and quietly between rising cliffs and water below that is still and deep. You can see limestone walls vertically emerging from the seawater. However, you cannot see skyscrapers, no highways, and no souvenir stalls. If you take an image  of this area and show it to a stranger, he may  mistakenly understand this as a fjord in western Norway. But this is not Norway; this is a remote Omani exclave named Musandam, and you can reach here after a few hours’ drive from Dubai.

This Musandam peninsula is often described as a “Norway of Arabia,” due to geographical similarities between the two areas. Especially the existence of fjord-like structures here. Unlike Norway, you can spend little money; there is no need to expose yourself to the uncomfortable Arctic weather or long flights. This is just a few hours away from Dubai and ideal for Dubai residents and international travelers who are passing through Dubai or visiting Dubai.

The Geography makes Musandam Look Like Norway

Musandam’s landscape is widely different from other Arabic countries, which are characterized by desert plains and sand dust. Musandam emerges from the sea with a series of massive limestone mountains. The coastline here is naturally cut into narrow and deep inlets. These inlets resemble Norwegian fjords. These inlets are called “Khors” by local Omani people.

“Khors” are not identical to or of the same origin as Norwegian fjords. It is different. Norwegian fjords have been created due to the glacier-related activities of thousands of years. Musandam “Khors” are created from tectonic activities and the arid weather in the area. While the process is so much different, the outcome is very much similar. In here, we can see how sea and land interact in different ways than other coastal landscapes in the world.

If you see these landscapes while travelling here by boat, you will see villages just like tiny dots located amidst hundreds of cliffs, and the water is still calm and quiet inside “khors” despite the water in the sea being rough. This nature of Musandam makes it closely like Norway.

There are differences also. Musandam has sunny, hot weather, and the sea temperature is suitable for swimming throughout the year. However, Norway has very cool weather and snowy mountains. And the sea temperature of Norway is not suitable for swimming for most of the year.

Fjord Cruising—A Different Way in Oman, Musandam

In Norway, you go through fjords via large cruise ships or ferries. However, in Musandam, the experience is different. Travelers go through the khors via Omani wooden dhows. This traditional simple boat type gives you comfortable sitting and shaded decks, and it also includes open sides that well connect you to the nature.

In here, there are no permanent timetables for travel via khors, and everything depends upon the weather patterns of the related day.
When dhows navigate into the “Khors,” the outside world and noise disappear, and you will feel like you are entering a new world.

You will suddenly notice dolphins are roaming in the water of “Khors” and going along with the dhow or emerging randomly and suddenly disappearing. You will also notice that the color of the rocky cliffs gradually changes from light green to gold due to the location of the sun.

Unlike Norwegian fjord journeys, journeys via Musandam “Khors” are very personally connected to you because of the nature of these journeys. Dhows stop at sheltered coves, and you can swim and snorkel here. Lunch is prepared inside the boats/dhows, and you will be served rice and curry and fruits.

While it is true that fjord travels are amazing, those do not make you personally close to the journey and are many times a distant experience. However, these “Khors” tours make you closer to the journey, and you will enjoy the journey so closely while becoming part of that ecosystem.

Villages Along the Cliffs

One of the most fascinating viewpoints here is the scattered fishing villages along the rocky cliffs. Many villages can be accessed only via boat, just like remote fishing villages around Norwegian fjords. The villagers here are doing fishing and small trading, and they have quite simple lifestyles, and there is incredibly low modernization here.

Villages are located between rocks and sea and have no cars. No roads here. When you are passing the villages via dhows, children will wave to you.
For travelers, these villages are a sign that this is not an artificial destination created for targeting tourism.

The ecosystem here and human settlements are very natural. Tourism is here, and it is well connected to nature and traditional livelihood and not much influencing the way of society.

Adventure in the Sunshine and Not Amidst the Arctic Ice

In Norway` fjords, we can witness the people doing activities like kayaking, hiking, wildlife watching, etc. In here, in Musandam, you can get the same experience, but sometimes, there are some logistic shortages.

Kayaking through Musandam’s khors can be considered as one of the closest similarities between Norway and Musandam. Paddling through inlets where cliffs emerge from both sides of the inlet can be considered a great experience. But the difference here is that you do not need to wear thermal jackets like in Norway.

Hiking opportunities also exist through rocky cliffs. But you do not need special equipment to maintain temperature balance, as you are not experiencing the cold here like in Norway.

Snorkeling and swimming can be considered another valuable experience here, and in fjords in Norway, you cannot do this due to the exceptionally low temperature there.

Musandam gives the essence of adventures and experiences like a fjord, but in a warm, sunny, convenient atmosphere without the influence of arctic cooling.

Low Financial Expenditure in Musandam

The most tangible difference between Musandam and the Norwegian fjord is the cost between those areas. Norway is considered one of the most expensive countries in the world. Their food, accommodation, and travel package fees are incredibly large. However, when it comes to Musandam travel packages from Dubai, they are exceptionally low. Typically, many travelers go via tour packages of travel agencies because those packages include transport, permits, meals, and activities in a single package.

Guided, organized tours are convenient for most of the travelers. And if you are self-driving, visit; costs are also low and affordable. In organized visits, you do not have to expend a lot, as there are no international flights, etc., from Dubai to Musandam. Musandam is a match for low-cost tours, especially trips starting from Dubai. Arabiers, an authorized travel agency in Dubai, also offers  Musandam tour packages from Dubai.

Getting Here from Dubai: Surprisingly Simple

One of the main advantages of Musandam is its proximity to Dubai. Mostly, organized tours start from Dubai and go through the northern emirates towards the Omani border and next to the Musandam. On this road trip, changes of landscape from urban concrete jungles to the rocky shores and khors will surprise you. For many travelers, it is a surprise that such a naturally different place is located relatively 3-4 hours’ journey time away from Dubai.

“Smart Luxury Travel” Concept and Musandam

With time, the definition of “luxury travel” has changed, and currently, in the term “luxury,” many travelers are seeking something beyond the nightlife and five-star hotels. Currently travelers are seeking places that are calm and quiet and highly connected with the natural environment, and to those people Musandam is a paradise to enjoy.

This is not Norway, but a Worthy Place to Visit

This is not Norway, but this has some geographical similarities with the fjord landscape of Norway even though cultural aspects of those two areas and climate patterns are completely different from each other. If you are visiting Dubai or if you are a Dubai resident, this is an ideal place to visit to have some escape from busy urban life and get some tranquility in your life from this natural wonder. However, if you are a non-UAE resident having a UAE travel visa, don’t spend too much time or overstay  with these natural wonders, as you will be fined if your UAE visa duration is exceeded.
